Neither Clara nor Livy were huge fans of aggressive behavior, although boarding a train in India, finding seats or sleeper berths, loading luggage—all of it required some aggression. “Such rows as went on between private servants or official porters carrying baggage would only seem excusable during an earthquake,” later wrote Clara. “We were always relieved when we failed to discover our own Indian servant in one of these station brawls.”

These silent crowds sat there with their humble bundles and baskets and small household gear about them, and patiently waited—for what? A train that was to start at some time or other during the day or night! They hadn’t timed themselves well, but that was no matter—the thing had been so ordered from on high, therefore why worry?
